Lakeside teams place second at Cedar Creek Relays

RUSTON —The Lakeside track teams placed second to Benton High School in the six team Cougar Relays at Cedar Creek.

Michael Stephens led the Warriors in the field events, as he placed first in the discus with a throw of 144'11" and second in the shot at 45'8".

Jecory Lathan was discus runner-up (128'4") and finished third in the shot put (45'3"). Rodney Jenkins and Chris Kennon had personal bests of 6'2" in the high jump. Jenkins took first place due to fewer misses.

Maurice Moore in his first long jump competition won with a 19'6" leap. Kennon took third in the triple jump (40'3") and Jenkins was sixth (39'4"). Brandon Elliot had a personal best vault of 9'6" for a fifth place finish in the pole vault.

On the track the Warriors claimed four championships. Chris Lewis won the 100 (10.68), Enrique Soto won the 1600 (4:31.20), Zach Levesque won the 3200 (10:29). and Lewis, Soto, Moore, and Cody Poe led the 1600 Relay to victory (3:35).

Levesque had a personal best of 2:10.80 for second in the 800. James Taylor also had two new personal-bests with a second in the 3200 (10:30) and third in the 1600 (4:49.50). Also eighth-grader Eric Greene ran a personal best of 5:00 in the 1600. Freshman Frankie Miles placed fourth in the 400 with a personal best of 56.8.

Shanae Collins and Jasmine Turner led the ladies in the field by winning championships in the long jump and discus.

Collins leap of 15'5" keeps her unbeaten. Turner hurled the discus 98'10" and also placed third in the shot put with a toss of 31'10". Jessica Bridges placed fourth in the javelin at 92'8".

Kimber Knotts and Kimberly Lyons added sixth and fourth place finishes in the high jump with jumps of 4'4" and 4'6".

The ladies distance runners led the way on the track as they turned in personal bests in every race they ran.

Anna Davidson placed second in the 1600 at 5:46 and was fourth in the 800 at 2:42. Alissa Landers took third in the 1600 (5:53) and second in the 3200 at 12:40.

Heather Schenck finished second in the 800 (2:56.4) and was fourth in the 400 (70.1). Davidson, Schenck, Landers, and Bridges ran on the thirrd place 1600 Relay (5:00). Shanae Collins placed third in the 100 meters (12.81). DeeDee Quarles took fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (18.44). Tamia Stanley, Zamariah Jenkins, Kimberly Lyons, and Shanae Collins ran on the third place 800 Relay (1:56.20). Bridges, Jenkins, Lyons, and Collins placed third in the 400 Relay (54.02).

This afternoon, the junior high will host the Richland Bank Junior High Relays. The nine-team meet will start at 3 p.m. and will feature local teams such as Webster and North Webster.

On Friday, March 23rd the annual Richald Bank Memorial Relays will be held at the Lakeside Track Complex.

This meet will feature 13 teams which include Neville, Natchitoches, Central, Cedar Creek, Calvary, Ruston, Ouachita Christian, Lakeview, Doyline, Homer, Haynesville, North Webster, and Simsboro.

Shelton to be honored

During Friday's meet the 2012 Excellence in Track Award will be presented to Nancy Shelton.

Shelton won state championship in the 100, 200, and 400 Relay her senior season. After leading the Lady Warriors to five-straight District Titles she was a vital part of the La. Tech women's track team which won seven-straight indoor and outdoor WAC Championships. Field events for Friday's meet will begin at 3 p.m. while running events will start at 5 p.m.
