Lady Apaches finish fourth in MAIS State Meet

lady_apachesCLINTON, MS. — The Glenbrook girls cross country team finished a surprising fourth in the MAIS Class A State meet on Monday (October 24th) at the Choctaw Trails course hosted by Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi.

The Lady Apache runners got a late start on the season and this was only their second meet of the year.

Glenbrook was led by seventh-grader Marcie Grissom who finished ninth overall and earned a spot on the All-State team with her time of 14:23 over the 3000 meter (two-mile) course.  Eighth-grader Catherine Willis finished in the Top 15 with her time of 15:15.

“I’m very proud of the young ladies who went with us and competed so well,” said Glenbrook cross country coach Gary Harris.  “We got organized kind of late and didn’t attend a lot of meets.  Throw into that mix the fact that several of our top runners were fighting injuries and some of our best times weren’t able to go to the meet.  So for the girls who competed, I’m tremendously proud of their effort and competitiveness.  “

Harris said that Grissom had to overcome some problems before the race.

“Marcie injured her knee last week so I shut her down to try and get her some rest,” he said. “For her to finish in the Top 10 was a great accomplishment for her and the team.  Catherine Willis, Kathy Moore and Heather Stahl all turned in good times for them, but the one who surprised me was Madison Harris.  She had a very strong race. And our captain, Sunni Wilson really gutted it out.  She was battling injuries and cramps and just toughed it out.  This team, with some improvement between now and next year, could compete for a state championship.”

The top five finishers for Glenbrook were:
1. Marcie Grissom 14:23 (9th)
2. Catherine Willis 15:15  (15th)
3. Kathy Moore 15:52 (24th)
4. Heather Stahl 17:09 (30th) and
5. Madison Harris 18:27 (44th)

5. Lamar Chr.   117 points
