Rodney Edward Avera

RodneyAveraFuneral services for Rodney Edward Avera, 60, will be held Friday, April 22, 2011 at 2 p.m. in Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Springhill, with the Rev. Marty Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Wilson Cemetery, Lewisville, Arkansas under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill.

Visitation will be held today (Thursday) from 5 until 8 p.m. at Bailey Funeral Home.

Mr. Avera was born Dec. 22, 1950 in Shreveport to Walter Edward and Olga Zula Burnett Avera and passed away Monday, April 18, 2011 in Shreveport,  following a courageous battle with cancer. 

He was a lifelong resident of Sarepta, a member of New Sarepta Baptist Church and was a machinist/welder/owner of Avera Machine Shop in Sarepta.  Mr. Avera worked from 2004-2007 in Beijing, China as a structural superintendent on an US Embassy project and enjoyed sharing his stories of the places he had visited and worked overseas. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, Nascar fan and also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.  Mr. Avera was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janeice Taylor Avera of Sarepta; son, Chris Avera and wife, April of Springhill;  daughter, Cheryl Foster and husband, Kenny of Bakersfield, California; grandchildren, Taylor, Bobby and Ryan Foster and Dayton Avera and Madelyn Whaley; brother, John R. Avera of Germany; mother-in-law, Joyce Taylor of Springhill;  and brother-in-law, Kevin Taylor and family of Sarepta.

Mr. Avera was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Chris Williamson, Rodney Ketchum, Jerry Shaw, Larry Wallace, Kenneth O’Glee, Gary Leonard, Gary Warlick, Randy Malone, Keary Johnston and Rodney’s “little buddy,” Josh Leonard. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bodcaw Hunting Club.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff of Lifecare Hospital, Dr. Steven Bonoil, Dr. Roscoe Chan, Dr. Robert Hernandez, Sherry Wallace, Kenneth O’Glee, Gary Leonard, Gary Warlick and Jerry Conly for their loving care and friendship of our loved one.
